Luther Burger and Hamdog Pictures!!!!!

This is actually an update to a story I had posted back in February... see the Half Burger/Half Hotdog: The Hamdog story.

You are looking at what could be the only picture of the Luther Burger on the internet!!! It was sent to me from a TBG reader!!! For those that don't know - the Luther Burger is a bacon cheeseburger served on a Krispy Kreme bun. This bad boy is offered up by Mulligan's - a suburban bar in Decatur, Georgia. Click on the picture below to see a really big picture of this mega-artery clogger.

The Hamdog is a hot dog wrapped in a beef patty that's deep fried, covered with chili, cheese and onions, and served on a hoagie bun topped with a fried egg and two fistfuls of fries. Aye carumba!! There are some pictures of the Hamdog already floating around the internet. Here is another really awesome picture of this beauty sent in by a TBG reader....

MEGA THANKS to Barry from Greenville, SC for sending in these pictures!!!!

    WOW!!!

I don't know whether to scream in delight, or in fear. The Luther and Hamdog are like the proverbial "tree of the knowledge of good and evil": I want it, but I know I shouldn't have it.

I actually just wrote somebody about Red's in Wiscasset, Maine that serves the "Sturdley." It is a cheese dog, wrapped in bacon, batter-dipped and deep-fried. So Good!

Oh, and that 11 lb burger in Clearfield, PA isn't too far away from me. In fact, a local diner started serving mammoth burgers in order to try and stake their claim, as well. I got the 4- pound hercules just for kicks. Ouch!

Anyway, I gotta say I love the site. If you want to check out my offering and maybe link to one another, let me know.

  3. I would kill someone, in front of their own mother, for a Luther Burger.

You have to look hard for unhealthy dining options up here in Seattle. Thank you for bringing these artery-clogging monstrosities to my attention. I have to go get a sponge to soak up all the drool on my keyboard now.

    that is freakin awesome

I like how they put the glazed side in. All that sugary glaze will melt and contribute to the greasy goodness which is the Ooze Factor

The late great R&B legend Luther Vandross was not only a great singer, he was the man who invented the Luther Burger. One day, Vandross wanted to make himself a burger, but he didn;t have buns. So he did the next best thing; He used two glazed Krispy Kreme donuts as a bun. Great stuff, R.I.P. Luther.

apparently everybody here wants to die of heart attacks. everybody here posting about how delicious this stuff looks...it is freaking ridiculous. nobody needs that much food...what is the point? to see how many animals you can kill with one food dish?

I have been a vegetarian for over 10 years now. But the Hamdog will threaten to bring me back to the carnivore way of life. I have never seen anything so gross, yet so appetizing.

Oh but do you know of the Vortex burger called the "Coronary Bypass"? It's a 1/2 pound burger topped with cheese, 3 strips of bacon, a fried egg, and it comes with a whopping side of mayo. On the menu it says, and I quote, "You must have lost your mind."

the Hamdog is just salty, not very good. the Luther Burger is actually pretty tasty- it has the same salt/sweet effect as those mcgriddle breakfast sandwiches at McDonalds.

I had one of the very first Luther Burgers made - as he was trying it out on customers he would make this monster and cut it into quarters and hand them out. It tastes just like you think it would - that sweetness of the donut combining with the smokey bacon and chargrilled beef - cheese smoothing everything out - it was an experience. I havent been back since - so I guess it wasnt that great that I had to get back there - but a cool bar - lots of games and tvs - pool tables - good beer - I guess I should go back - see you later...

    Party Guy.....

My buddies, and i heard about the ham dog, so with the big NCAA on, we decided to throw a party featuring the Ham dog!! It started with three of us, and now has grown to at least twenty with reservations still coming in. I'm known for throwing the best parties, and even had the press at my house to cover one once, but I have never thrown a party that had people coming for miles around to eat a sandwich. We hjave a doctor coming for safety reasons, and brought in a porta-pot. Wifes Idea!!!

anyone who posts a denouncement of this beautiful creation is not a man. sure it is horrible for you and heart attack inducing, and thats why it looks freaking delicious. although i would advise weeks of cardio exercise before eating one....but christ that sounds disgustingly good.

I wonder what would happen if you combined the contents of both the Luther Burger (beef, cheese, bacon, and Krispy Kreme Donut) with the Hamdog (beef, wiener, bacon, cheese, onions, chili, french fries).

If I crossed the Luther Burger with the Hamdog, I'd either call it the Kenny McCormick, the Undertaker, or the Grim Reaper, for you would probably be dead after eating this combination.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous9:04 AM

It's not THAT bad if you break it down into its components. 1 bacon cheeseburger and 1 donut. How many days have you eaten both items seperately?

It's not even a frosted donut! now wait a minute...

A LITTLE worrying considering Luther Landross died from complications of his WEIGHT RELATED DIABETES! Half his (overweight) family have been fatally struck down also (one of his brothers died in his 20's with the same problem!

I tried a homemade version today. It was a little weird, but I liked it overall. I'm glad I've joined the club.

And to all those tongue-clucking naysayers, neither I nor anyone else thinks this is health food. We consume these out of curiosity and defiance.

  46. Wanna kill yourself with these? Eat at least a couple a week for 10 years. That might do it. Otherwise, its just a high calorie burger, and nobody's gonna die from just one. Not feel all that great when you're done? Probably. Die? Nope. That said, I will have one. Oh yes. I will.

    Oh, and Tickles Tapeworm....

There are PLENTY of unhealthy dining options in Seattle. Just gotta know where to look.

I'd start at the Hurricane, or the 5-point.

  54. Vortex in ATL also has the double coronary bypass. It's a cheeseburger with bacon, mayonnaise, fried egg sandwiched between two grilled cheese sandwiches. It will screw your insides up for two days but my god it's delicious.

There's a place in NYC near the village called Griff Dog's that serves a hot dog, wrapped in bacon, deep fried, topped with avocado. I had two and wanted more.

There's nothing wrong with a little gluttony, anon, as long as you balance it out with exercise and typically moderate lifestyle. I run marathons son, ain't no fat on this body...

  58. i worked across the street from mulligan's for two years. we would trade our pizza for luther burgers and hamdogs, (i think i was the only one out of my fellow employees to ever order a hamdog as it struck fear into the hearts of even the strong). the luther burgers are great, a friend of mine recently graduated college and was friends with one of the cooks. this was months ago after mulligans closed down. i forget the man's name, but for the graduation party, we cooked out and he made a huge platter of luther burgers. it was the most beautiful thing ever. i only ate two right away.
if you have any "insider" questions for someone who worked there, i could relay an email to get in contact with that ex employee.
ps, about two miles south is home of the "ghetto burger". please check out this link if it's news to you! http://www.slashfood.com/2007/05/18/burger-of-the-day-ghetto-burger-at-anns-in-atlanta/

I am a professional chef. Literally began my first apprenticeship on my 13th birthday. Now, at 56, that gives me 43 years of cooking professionally. I give you that history only to qualify my opinion/comment.

The Luther scares me.... something about a Crispy Kreme for a bun... BUT, that Hamdog looks like a dream come true to me. It goes beyond Classic French. Beyond California's Pan-Pacific tilt to Asian. It goes all the way to the reason some people look at food and think of sex. It looks sensual, beastly, and delightful all rolled into one.

Tomorrow, in the kitchen where I work, I will try frantically to recreate that 8th wonder of the world.

    Thank you for sharing!
    Chef William
